Product description

Calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin D are four elements that are essential for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.

Even after we stop growing, we continually break down and rebuild our bones to repair microfractures and maintain bone health. 1 This process is called bone remodeling. We also use the calcium and magnesium in our bones to maintain blood and tissue homeostasis (i.e., overall body balance). 2 So, our bones not only help us run and jump, but also help maintain body balance by providing key minerals.

Lack of zinc in the diet and vitamin D from the sun also impacts the bone remodeling process and can result in weak and brittle bones. Zinc promotes bone growth and regeneration3. Vitamin D allows us to absorb calcium efficiently and is essential for calcium mineralization in bones4.

Over time, the transfer of calcium and magnesium from our bones to our tissues to maintain muscle homeostasis and function results in increasingly greater bone remodeling and increasingly fragile and weak bones1. Low bone density (osteoporosis), increases our risk of falls and fractures, and is a leading cause of loss of quality of life and independence as we age5.

Bone loss is a slow, silent process, and we usually don’t realize it’s happening until we’re diagnosed with osteoporosis or suffer a fracture. However, 10% of Canadians over the age of 40 and 21% of postmenopausal women have osteoporosis. 6 Surprisingly, after suffering a hip fracture, 22% of Canadian women and 33% of Canadian men die within the first year. 6 There is also an increased risk of mortality among people who have suffered a hip fracture in the past 10 years. 7

We should aim to get 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium9, 8 to 11 mg of zinc, and at least 400 mg of magnesium per day. Research has shown that the vast majority of us do not meet these needs through our diets, even if we eat very healthily. Therefore, supplementation is an important tool to supplement our diet.

Salus Calcium-Magnesium supports healthy bone development and maintenance of bones and teeth, helps us maintain healthy muscle function and supports homeostasis by providing the essential nutrients calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin D.
