Smoking increases the risk significantly and a healthy diet can have a significant effect on risk reduction (Abdel-Aal et al., 2013). Large-scale clinical studies (AREDS and AREDS2) have demonstrated the preventive effect of lutein and zinc (Hobbs and Bernstein, 2014).
